How Long to Smoke Baked Potatoes
How long to smoke baked potatoes depends on a few factors, such as the size of the potatoes and the temperature of your smoker. For smaller potatoes, we recommend smoking them for about 1-2 hours. For larger potatoes, we recommend smoking them for 2-3 hours. The key is to keep an eye on the potatoes and make sure they don’t get too overcooked. You can always test them by piercing them with a fork to see if they’re soft all the way through.
When it comes to temperature, you’ll want to make sure your smoker is set to 225 degrees Fahrenheit. This should be low enough that the potatoes won’t cook too quickly on the outside while still being hot enough to cook through.

Notes
- Put it on the pellet smoker grill along with the meats that you are cooking.
- Make cheesy potatoes by adding 1/2 cup of shredded Colby jack cheese.
- Add cooked bacon pieces for more flavor along with the shredded cheese if you would like to make cheesy bacon potatoes.
- Pick the right kind of potato such as red-skinned or russet potatoes.
- Don't want to use aluminum foil, prepare it in a metal pan. Spray the pan with nonstick cooking spray and make it as described.
- Add a dollop of sour cream to top of the cooked potatoes.
- Cook Time: cooking times can vary a lot with smoking recipes simply because there are so many variables at play which can impact time: humidity, temperature, hot spots on your grill, wind, etc. After testing on a Traeger we found that after 3+ hours at 225 degrees F the potatoes were smokey, but not soft so we finished cooking them at a higher temp. This resulted in a smokey, soft potato – feel free to cook longer or less depending upon your smoker and your desired softness.
- Add-Ins: feel free to add in some onions or garlic – both would be good in here!
- Russet Potatoes: feel free to use russet potatoes if you want! They may cook a little faster, so just test the potatoes often for doneness!
